A down economy may be the perfect time to find excellent administrative help (if you’re looking). Support personalities are generally cautious individuals, wary of risk, so they are typically not big job hoppers. With recent layoffs, some of these individuals may be forced out of work and are therefore available - good news if you happen to find yourself with an opening for an administrative, support, or service position.
Here are some things to remember when interviewing support personalities:
— Due to their rather reserved nature, they are not especially comfortable in interviews. Don’t let their nervousness or quiet demeanor turn you off. It is not a lack of confidence in their abilities, but rather social discomfort, very typical in support staffers. While they may not be upbeat or socially confident in an interview, this bodes well for their performance on the job, as they are likely to work well on solitary activities, those that require individual concentration versus social interaction.
— They are probably straightforward in their communication style, answering interview questions briefly and matter-of-factly.
— Their work histories will probably reflect only a few jobs. If an applicant was with their last company for a long time, their interview skills are probably not as strong as someone who moves around a lot (the experienced job hopper). That’s not necessarily a bad thing, is it?
